How to Widen a Doorway: 14 Steps
Doorways are an essential part of any home or office, providing both functionality and style. However, over time, doorways may need to be widened for various reasons, such as accommodating large furniture, improving accessibility, or simply updating the appearance of the space. In this article, we will discuss the 14 steps to widen a doorway.
1. Gather the necessary tools: Before starting the project, make sure you have all the required tools and materials. You will need a tape measure, pencil, saw, hammer, pry bar, drill, screws, nails, shims, and a level.
2. Remove any trim or molding: Use a pry bar to carefully remove any trim or molding from around the door frame. This will expose the wall studs and header beam.
3. Measure the doorway: Measure the width and height of the current doorway opening.
4. Plan the new dimensions: Determine how wide you want the new doorway opening to be and mark out these dimensions on either side of the current opening.
5. Cut the drywall: Use a saw to carefully cut along your markings on both sides of the doorway to remove excess drywall.
6. Remove wall studs: Using a reciprocating saw or hacksaw, carefully remove any wall studs that are in the way of your expanded doorway opening.
7. Reinforce header beam: Depending on how much wider you are making your doorway, you may need to add additional support to the header beam above the doorframe. Consult with a structural engineer if needed.
8. Mark new stud locations: Based on your updated measurements and desired doorway width, mark where new studs will be installed on either side of the opening.
9. Install new studs: Cut new 2×4 lumber pieces to fit between the top and bottom plates of your wall framing and align them with your marks from step 8. Attach them to the plates with nails or screws, using a level to ensure they are plumb.
10. Repair drywall: Cut new pieces of drywall to fit the wider doorway opening, and attach them to the new studs using screws. Don’t forget to apply joint compound and tape to seams for a smooth finish.
11. Install a new door jamb: Measure the width of your new doorway and cut a new door jamb accordingly from a wooden board. Attach it to the widened opening using shims and screws.
12. Hang the door: If you are using a pre-hung door, this step is as simple as positioning it in place and securing it with screws. If you are hanging an existing door in a widened opening, make any necessary adjustments to hinges or strike plates before attaching them to the jamb.
13. Install new trim or molding: Measure, cut, and attach new trim or molding pieces around your expanded doorway flush with the wall.
14. Paint or stain: Use matching paint or stain on your new door jamb, trim, and any exposed wood from your header beam reinforcement project to ensure everything blends seamlessly together.
With these 14 steps, you will have successfully widened your doorway. Although this project may seem complicated at first glance, careful planning and attention to detail can ensure that you achieve the desired results efficiently and safely.
