How to Make a Cage Skirt
Are you looking to add a unique and fashionable twist to your wardrobe? A cage skirt might be just the statement piece you’re searching for! Cage skirts have been turning heads in the fashion world, thanks to their interesting structure and eye-catching design. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making your very own cage skirt.
Materials Needed:
1. Flexible plastic tubing or boning (enough to create the desired number of hoops)
2. Fabric strips or ribbon
3. Elastic waistband
4. Measuring tape
5. Scissors
6. Sewing machine or needle and thread
Step 1: Measure and Plan Your Skirt Dimensions
Start by determining how long and wide you want your cage skirt to be. Measure your waist size and add an inch or two for seam allowance and ease of movement. Next, decide on the number of hoops you would like to have in the skirt; this will dictate its overall shape and structure.
Step 2: Cut the Tubing
Measure and cut your tubing according to the desired size of each hoop. Be sure to leave an additional inch on each end – this extra space will be used to connect the two ends of your tubing later.
Step 3: Create Fabric Loops
Measure and cut your fabric strips or ribbon into loop-sized pieces (each piece should be slightly wider than the diameter of your tubing). Fold each strip in half lengthwise, then sew along the open edge, leaving a small opening at one end for inserting the tubing.
Step 4: Insert Tubing into Fabric Loops & Connect Ends
Slide each piece of tubing through its corresponding fabric loop until both ends meet. Once aligned, connect the two ends of the tubing by inserting one into the other, using hot glue or a similar adhesive if necessary.
Step 5: Sew the Fabric Loops to the Skirt Base
Measure and cut a piece of elastic waistband to comfortably fit around your waist. Sew the ends of the elastic together to create a circular skirt base. Evenly space the fabric loops around the skirt base and sew them to the elastic, securing them in place. Be sure to align each hoop so that it’s parallel with all others.
Step 6: Connect Hoops with Vertical Fabric Strips or Ribbon (Optional)
For a more polished look, you may choose to connect each hoop vertically with additional fabric strips or ribbon. Simply measure and cut pieces long enough to span from hoop to hoop, then sew them in place along the edges of your fabric loops. This will help maintain the cage-like structure and create a visually appealing effect.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully created your very own cage skirt. With practice and creativity, you can experiment with different materials, colors, and designs to craft unique cage skirts that are perfect for any occasion. Let your imagination run wild and enjoy expressing yourself through this fashionable and trendy statement piece!
