How to Do a Spiral Perm
A spiral perm can give you the bouncy, voluminous curls you’ve always dreamed of. The process may seem daunting, but with a little patience and know-how, you can achieve beautiful lasting curls. Follow this step-by-step guide to create a stunning spiral perm at home or in a salon.
1. Prepare your hair
Before starting the spiral perm process, ensure that your hair is clean and free from any buildup or residue. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo, followed by a light conditioner. Make sure to towel dry your hair, so it’s damp but not soaking wet.
2. Section your hair
Sectioning your hair will make it easier to manage and perm. Divide the hair into four equal quadrants by creating a center part from the forehead to the nape of the neck and another part from ear to ear. Use hair clips to secure each section.
3. Choose the appropriate rod size
Selecting the right rod size is crucial for achieving the desired curl pattern. For tight spirals, opt for smaller rods, while larger rods will give you looser curls. Always keep in mind that larger rods are better suited for longer hair.
4. Apply end papers
Take one subsection of hair in any quadrant and apply end papers to each strand before rolling it onto the perm rod. End papers protect fragile ends from over-processing and help keep them smooth during the perming process.
5. Wrap your hair in rods
Starting at the bottom of each subsection, wrap an inch-wide section of hair around a rod in a corkscrew motion working your way up until you reach the scalp; fasten securely with elastic bands provided with rods or pins if needed.
6. Mix and apply perm solution
In a well-ventilated area, carefully mix according to manufacturer’s instructions; wear gloves when handling chemicals. Apply the perm solution evenly over each perm rod, ensuring the solution coverings every strand wrapped around the rods.
7. Process the perm
Allow the perm solution to process for the recommended time, typically 20-30 minutes for most hair types. Do not process for longer than instructed to avoid damaging your hair.
8. Rinse and neutralize
After processing time is completed, rinse your hair thoroughly with warm, not hot water, ensuring all residual perm solution is washed away. Apply a neutralizer to each rod to stabilize the newly formed bonds in your hair, then allow it to set for about 5 minutes and rinse again.
9. Remove rods and style
Carefully remove each rod from your hair by gently unraveling them. To minimize frizz, avoid brushing or combing your spirals immediately after removing rods – first, gently scrunch your freshly permed curls with a light styling mousse or a leave-in conditioner. Air dry or use a diffuser attachment on low heat on your hairdryer.
Congratulations! You have successfully achieved perfect spiral curls using the spiral perm method. Ensure that you take proper care of your newly permed hair by using curl-friendly shampoos, conditioners, and styling products to maintain the health and bounce of your gorgeous curls.
