3 Ways to Make Torches
Torches have been used for centuries as a source of light, heat, and ambiance. They are not only practical but also add an enchanting touch to backyard gatherings, camping trips, and other outdoor events. There are several ways you can make your own torches using easily accessible materials. Here, we will outline three methods to create simple, yet effective DIY torches.
1. Oil-Soaked Cloth Torch
Materials needed:
– A long wooden or bamboo stick
– An old cotton cloth or rag
– Vegetable oil or olive oil (non-flammable oils will not work)
– A small bucket or container
– String or wire
Instructions:
1. Cut the old cloth into a long strip measuring about 2 inches wide and 4 feet long.
2. Soak the cloth in vegetable or olive oil by placing it in the container with the oil.
3. Wrap the soaked cloth around the top end of the stick, leaving about 8 inches of bare stick at the top.
4. Use string or wire to fasten the wrapped cloth securely to the stick.
5. Allow any excess oil to drip off before lighting.
This torch can burn for several hours and is perfect for outdoor gatherings or camping trips.
2. Wax Torches
Materials needed:
– Long wooden or bamboo sticks
– Paraffin wax
– Sawdust
– A double boiler
– Kitchen tongs
Instructions:
1. Fill the double boiler with water and melt the paraffin wax over low heat.
2. While waiting for the wax to melt, spread sawdust evenly onto a large tray.
3. Dip the sticks into the melted wax using kitchen tongs; ensure they’re coated evenly, leaving about 8 inches at the top free from wax.
4. Roll each wax-coated stick in sawdust until completely covered.
5. Allow the wax-sawdust coated sticks to cool and dry.
These wax torches are easy to light and burn longer than oil-soaked cloth torches.
3. Tin Can Torch
Materials needed:
– A tin can (soup or vegetable cans work well)
– A cotton wick
– Tiki torch fuel or lamp oil
– A nail
– A hammer
– Pliers
Instructions:
1. Remove the label, clean, and dry the tin can.
2. Use the nail and hammer to punch a hole in the center of the can’s bottom.
3. Thread the cotton wick through the hole, leaving about 1 inch of wick sticking out from the bottom. You may need pliers to help pull it through.
4. Fill the tin can with tiki torch fuel or lamp oil, leaving about ½ inch of space at the top.
5. Adjust the exposed wick to about 1 inch above the fuel level.
This tin can torch is great for tabletops, and you can customize it by painting or decorating the outside of the can.
By using these three methods, you can easily create DIY torches for your next outdoor event or camping adventure. Remember always to exercise caution when using fire and never leave your torches unattended while lit. With proper safety measures in place, you’ll be able to enjoy a cozy atmosphere with your homemade torches.
