How to Peel a Potato: 10 Steps
Step 1: Gather Your Tools
Before you begin, make sure you have a sharp vegetable peeler or paring knife, a cutting board, and a bowl of cold water.
Step 2: Wash the Potato
Rinse the potato under running water to remove any dirt or debris. Use your hands or a soft brush to gently scrub the surface.
Step 3: Choose Your Peeling Approach
Decide whether you want to use a vegetable peeler or a paring knife. Vegetable peelers provide more control and are safer, while paring knives cover more surface area quickly but require more skill.
Step 4: Hold the Potato Properly
Hold the potato securely on the cutting board with one hand. Make sure your fingers are tucked away from the path of the blade.
Step 5: Begin Peeling with a Vegetable Peeler
Position the vegetable peeler against the top edge of the potato and apply gentle pressure. Pull the peeler towards your body while maintaining contact with the potato’s surface. Rotate and reposition the potato as necessary to peel its entire exterior.
Step 6: Begin Peeling with a Paring Knife
If using a paring knife, hold it at a slight angle against the potato’s surface. Start at one end of the potato and gently glide the knife away from your body, removing a thin strip of skin in one motion. Continue around the entire potato until all skin is removed.
Step 7: Remove Eyes or Blemishes
Potatoes often contain small indentations called “eyes” as well as other blemishes. Use the tip of your peeler or paring knife to carefully remove these imperfections.
Step 8: Place Peeled Potato in Cold Water
After you’ve finished peeling the potato, immediately place it into a bowl of cold water. This prevents discoloration and helps remove excess starch.
Step 9: Inspect and Repeat
Once the potato is submerged in water, inspect it for any areas that need additional peeling or cleaning. Repeat steps 5-8 for all remaining potatoes.
Step 10: Drain and Pat Dry
When you’re ready to cook your peeled potatoes, carefully drain the water and pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
With these 10 simple steps, you’ll be well on your way to preparing perfectly peeled potatoes for any dish!
